  1. FEMA National Risk Index (NRI), December 2025 release (v1.20), data updated December 15, 2025. Ratings are NRI expected annual loss ratings. They compare states and territories with each other. They describe a whole state, not any one home. FEMA says NRI data are meant for planning and broad nationwide comparisons, and aren't a substitute for a local risk assessment. 2. County counts: KAVO360's count of NRI county hazard risk ratings, December 2025 release (v1.20), data updated December 16, 2025. These risk ratings are different from the state ratings on the map. They also factor in social vulnerability and community resilience. In Louisiana, counties are parishes.
  3. FEMA, OpenFEMA Dataset: Disaster Declarations Summaries - v2 (https://www.fema.gov/api/open/v2/DisasterDeclarationsSummaries), retrieved October 21, 2026 at 11:35 AM CT. Each disaster number is counted once per state, 1953 to October 17, 2026. "Most common" and "This month" use natural hazard types only. Fire management assistance declarations are counted separately and aren't in the declaration totals. OpenFEMA dataset page
  4. State shapes: US Census Bureau cartographic boundaries via us-atlas 3.0.1. Territories are in the table and the compare list.

We're launching first in Louisiana and Florida, with plans to grow nationwide.

Fire management assistance declarations let FEMA give grants to state, local and tribal governments to help mitigate, manage and control fires on forests or grasslands that threaten to become a major disaster. We count them separately from major disaster and emergency declarations.
